| Baotou city is the biggest city in Inner Mongolian municipality. It lies inthe west of Inner Mongolian municipality. It is also the one of bigger cities in ourcountry which government confirmed. In people's impressions, Baotou city only is afresh and important basic industry city. In fact, it has not only modern industrycivilization but also has lots of relic to prove it's business civilization in its history.This paper, from the city historical geography view, studies the origin,development of Baotou old city and the old city how to change from Tongzhi time ofthe Qing dynasty to 1949. It also studies the old city's the structure,internal space layoutand the influence of people's activities, etc. Through the research, we want to know theresplendence of Baotou old city in the past and get the evolution rule of the old city.Then, it supplies a reference to the local economy and culture's development.This paper is made up of four parts as follows:Part one is an introduction. It is mainly about the research object,time limited,research meaning,research methods and the current research situations. Because thehistorical documents and materials about Baotou area are quite few, the time of theresearch has to delimit from Tongzhi time of the Qing Dynasty to 1949. In this time,Baotou old city had a brilliant history in business field and the development situation ofthe urban space pattern had a great improvement.Part two is the first chapter of the paper. Firstly, it introduces the naturalenvironment in Baotou area from the macroscopically respect; Secondly, it explainsBaotou area's the evolution of district in historical period, and points out that because ofwars, it always gets into stagnation state even falling. The mainly cause is Baotou lies inthe transition area between the Han nationality and northern nomadic people. Accordingto Mr. Zhu Kezhen's research, we can find the change of Baotou area in history isidentical with the law of temperature change over the past 5,000 years in our country.Part three is the second chapter of paper. It is the main part of this paper. Itexpounds distribution and characteristic of the city wall, the defense installations, the main roads, the main religious architecture in the city and the local-style housebuildings, etc. In addition, the paper researches that the rapid improvement ofcommerce greatly effects on the city' inner structure and people's organization. Finally,it concludes some characteristic about Baotou old city's structure: 1. the history ofBaotou city is very short; 2. the development of layout takes on unordered within thecity; 3. Variety appears within the city; 4. Lack the core within the city and the city'sdevelopment and the commercial development is interdynamic and so on.The last part is the third chapter. It mainly explains how to protect and utilize thehistory and culture heritage of Baotou old city. It points out the current that theprotecting of the trace of local history and culture is not optimism. It also introduces thetourist resources of local history and culture and the development prospect is well;Finally, the paper gives some suggestions and ideas about protection and use of thehistoric site of old city of Baotou.The paper's innovation lies in:First, carrying on recoverability research to the appearance of the old city of Baotouin terms of urban historical geography for the first time;Second, researching and discussing the cause that it isn't constantly development inhistorical period Baotou area;Third, comparatively detailed each component within Baotou city, and it hassummarized characteristics of the space structure inside Baotou.
