The collocation of the words is a universal but important issue in any languages. It is ubiquitous throughout people's daily communication as well as lingual acquisition. Though words are the basic units of a language, communication can not be achieved by a single word in most cases. Words collocate to construct linguistic structures to fulfill the communicative function of the language. According to this, it is necessary to study the collocation of linguistic structures to reveal the profound significance behind the linguistic phenomenon.Based on our studies to verb-object phrases in contemporary Chinese, it is to study the significations of words above all to study collocation. Significations have been a result of interaction of various factors, including the cognition of human beings to the external world, the accumulation of previous experiences, as also some physical and mental activities. Two facets have been mainly referred during the studies. The first is the correlative scenes associated with the words, which means the things that the words represent or the scenes where the activities occur. The other is the similarity between categories which words belong to. The similarity allows words belong to different categories interact on each other to create metaphor, as a result of which the significations transfer and the collocation varies.Accordingly, this dissertation aims the scene and the metaphor as two primary tasks to study the collocation of verb-object phrases. The former acts on the basic signification of words as prerequisite for signification to generate, while the latter acts on the extensive signification of words as a manner for signification to vary. The 5th part is the essence of this dissertation. Verb-object phrases are sorted into two groups by the independence the words collocate: the independent phrases and the fixed phrases. Studies to these phrases on signification are carried out on the base of the division. And the independent phrases are furtherly sorted into phrases based on basic signification and phrases based on extensive signification. The theory of the scene is applied to studies to the former. Analysis to the scene of words are used to collect things and activities that can be collocated with to create dependence of cognition, so the a net of signification can be established for further study. On account of the fact that things and activities associate with the same scene can not always collocate, a further procedure of the cognition to participate in the selection to the ultimate will be necessary.Studies to the latter are carried out by analysis to the function of metaphor in the variation of signification. Studies to the similarity of things and activities show the possibility that words interact on signification and the variation occurs. The word which has affected others can be counter-affected, so words collocate with the the affected words can collocate with the word which affects.Studies to fixed phrases are carried out at the facets of metaphor and social custom. As these phrases are always derived from the history, most of the signification have varied from the original state, the collocation is largely established on extension and variation of the signification. The first 4 parts of this dissertation is the necessary preparations for the 5th part, they are indispensable.
