The thesis is based on the relation between foreign language teaching and testing, which mainly discusses and analyses variety of tests. Accordingly it argues that the stimulating function of variety of tests does exist. Robert put forward that variety of tests have practical meaning which is in favor of checking the learner's performance and adjusting teaching plans and methods for teachers. Dealing with the relation between teaching and testing well, can not only help students to know the emphases of learning, but can also help teachers to control the class teaching.Language testing puts the role of stimulus in the first place. A good testing can benefit students and teachers in many aspects. More and more concern has been paid to variety of tests which can examine students on a certain language point timely by English teachers. Then what is the function of variety of tests? What is the relation between testing and teaching? This paper is intended to answer these questions. The whole thesis consists of six chapters. The first chapter mainly discusses the relation between language teaching and testing and shows the definition, aims, methods and the practical meaning of variety of tests. A good testing has better effects on teaching and learning. By describing the project briefly, the thesis puts forward the hypothesis: The stimulating function of variety of tests does exit. The second chapter is a brief presentation on the current research in testing field."Examination Guiding"reflects that examination does not act in accord with teaching. Teachers teach for the sake of the students'high scores and neglect the needs of students and the function of testing. Thereby teachers should pay more attention to the function of variety of tests, not testing scores. According to the current problems, teachers should look testing on affective measures. The third chapter analyses the forms of variety of tests. It comprises the analysis of the contents, forms and tasks. A reasonable test paper should have variety of forms and to choose suitable approaches according to the special evaluate aims. The main task of the test is to understand and stimulate learning and teaching. The fourth chapter focuses on the research methods in this thesis: objects, subjects, instruments and methodology. Firstly the data results of the research is analyzed, the examinees are the ninth grade of junior high school. Secondly variety of tests are designed and discussed in order to prove if the stimulating function does exist. The fifth chapter is the part of the empirical study of the thesis- the analysis of variety of tests and the questionnaire. The first part discusses the papers according as students'different language problems. The second part analyzes the data results, the questionnaire is composed of the condition of students'learning and the feedback on variety of tests. The sixth chapter is the presentation of conclusion and proposals. We base on the results to discuss if the hypothesis comes into existence. We hope variety of tests will be concerned to the stimulating function by more and more foreign language teachers so that they can design the variety of tests for different students.
