An Analysis Of Lin Yutang's Translation Of Fu Sheng Liu Ji From The Perspective Of Intertextuality

Intertextuality was first introduced by Kristeva in the early 1960s, and it is a popular concept in modern literary theory in imitation of structuralism and post-structuralism. In the early 1990s, intertextuality was introduced into translation studies, infusing a new perspective into this field.Intertextuality refers to the relationship between different texts. In accordance with intertextuality theory, all texts interact with each other and no text is independent. Translation is a kind of the transformation of intertextuality, for the original text is the pretext of the target text. Combining intertextuality theory with translation is a new research area in translation studies. This area is also full of challenges for translators because of the differences between the two languages or two cultures. In the process of translation, intertextuality may give rise to a lot of complications. Lin Yutang adopted different and flexible translation techniques to deal with intertextual signals in order to reproduce and reconstruct intertextuality. Although there is something amiss in the translation, the whole translation generally shows the plentiful intertextual information. Therefore, Lin Yutang has made his contribution to spreading the Chinese culture to the West by transmitting such information from Chinese into English.This thesis adopts the English version of Fu Sheng Liu Ji (FSLJ), Six Chapters of Floating Life as a case study because it contains a wealth of intertextual signals. The author of the thesis attempts to incorporate the intertextual theory into translation and expects the target language readers to gain equivalent response of intertextuality with the source language readers by analyzing the translation of intertextual signals in FSLJ.
