Exercise designing is an important part in the teaching material compilation. Read-learning is a procedural knowledge acquisition. The effective means of accomplishing reading is exercising, so the reading materials design is particularly important. This thesis, from exercise in the pattern, quantity, and content, selects four representative middle-level reading materials of TCSL (teaching Chinese as a second language) over the past decade as objects of this study to investigate and analyze the reading exercise design.As for the exercises quantity studying, the author investigates the total exercises of each textbook respectively. As for the exercises style studying, the author researches the four sets of books on exercises'style, distribution and reproducibility rate. Resting on the foundation of compiling teaching materials theories, the author makes relevant suggestions on rationality of these two aspects. As for the content studying, firstly, the author distinguishes the comprehension exercise and language knowledge exercise according to the nature of reading class. The language knowledge exercise is divided into Chinese characters exercise, vocabulary exercise, sentence exercise and chapter exercise. And then, the author takes the data statistics for these five objects listed above on exercise style density and exercise quantum density. Through statistics, the author macro-analyzes whether these five objects are reasonable on exercise quantum and exercise style design. Besides, the author does some specific works:analyzing the rationality of the comprehension exercise on question types arrangement; analyzing whether the arrangement of specific contents in Chinese characters practice, vocabulary practice, sentence practice, chapter exercises meet the characters of reading class and the stage differences of middle-level reading teaching.Finally, the author puts forward the relevant proposals on the design of middle-level reading exercises.
