In modern Chinese, interrogative pronoun "Shenme" has always been the research focus of the study. Based on the synchronic level and the research results of "Shenme" by predecessors on diachronic level, from the aspects of grammar, syntax and pragmatics, this thesis gives a brand-new explanation of "Shenme" and makes the description of "Shenme" in the synchronic development process clearer. This thesis will be divided into five parts.The first chapter of the thesis briefly introduces the research purpose and meaning, research object and methods, research ideas and data sources of the thesis.From the aspect of semantic the second chapter makes a classification of the usage of "Shenme", including the basic usage of "Shenme" in interrogation and special usage in non-interrogation. This thesis divides the usage of "Shenme" as interrogation, indefinite, referential, non-referential, suspicion, negation, list and metonymy, and conducts semantic analysis of "Shenme" from these eight aspects respectivelyThe third chapter basically analyses "Shenme" and its syntactic structure and syntactic functions of related patterns. From the aspects of the syntactic distribution, function and related syntactic, it makes a further study and expatiation to the syntactic features and functions of related patterns of "Shenme". In this chapter, we mainly elaborated four patterns of "x什么(的) ","什么x (的) " "x什么x (y) "and "什么x不x (的) ", and analysizes the feature and function of the four patterns in aspects of semantic, syntactic and pragmatic.From the pragmatic perspective, the fourth chapter elaborated the distribution of "Shenme" is different sentence patterns, and mainly analysized the pragmatics negation of "Shenme" and discouse analysis of "Shenme" in natural conversation. It also researched the pragmatics meaning and funciton of "Shenme" and the different mood expressed by "Shenme" in various language environments.The last part is the ending part of the thesis. It summarized the content researched above and pointed the problems and shortage.
