Chinese absolute adverbs of degree which are few in number but distinct from one another can be often misused by foreign students and therefore considered as a barrier for them to learn Chinese and communicate in daily life. In the process of teaching Chinese as foreign language, the teaching of absolute adverbs of degree has not been given its due attention either in the textbooks or in teachers’ explanation. This thesis focuses on 12 absolute adverbs of degree selected from the first and second-degree words of the Syllabus of Chinese Words, based on the biased errors from the Chinese Corpus made by Beijing Language and Culture University. The author, then, makes a detailed description of these 12 adverbs from the syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Meanwhile, the author makes statistic analyses of the questionnaire on the foreign students together with the examples in the corpus, summarizes the error types and causes and then puts forward some teaching strategies accordingly.
