Hindemith was one of the greatest musicians in the 20 thcentury in Germany. He was not only a composer but was also a viola player, theorist and educator. His music works extremely distinct and had his own personality characteristics. He was an outstanding representative of the Neo-classicism period, because of the influence of the counterpoint during in the Baroque Music. He also considered as the conservatism of the Modern Music, and another Bach in the 20 th century.This paper will focus on the experience and attitude of his life by Hindemith. And studied different characteristics for his viola’s works in different periods. Most of the paper focused analysis the background of the creation, the style of the music, the establishment of the orchestra as well as the whole performance characteristics with his most representative works of the viola-- Der Schwanendreher.About the playing for the whole music, the paper mainly analyzed the form, mode and musical technology and performance methods. Meanwhile it studied the nature of the melodic motion, practice of the scale with the melody, processing of the playing across the strings, playing clearly in the left hand, different kinds of triplets, practice with the dissonant intervals and chords, the change of dynamics, the solo and orchestra’s relationship and so on.In conclusion, Hindemith used a variety of techniques of the composition, and showed the timber of the viola incisively and vividly. And we can find the talent of compose by Hindemith. In the whole piece, whether the type, quantity and influence from the music work, or from his music thoughts, Hindemith is one of the most important modern musicians in the history of music.
