As a famous German Musician, Paul Hindemith had composed a quite number of viola works, his unceasing explorer and practice has greatly promoted the development of viola. This paper choose his 4 Unaccompanied Sonatas(op.11 no.5、op.25 no.1、op.31 no.4、1937), to do the analysis in terms of illustration, spectrum, literature and comparative methods. This paper selected chord structure for comparative study of four unaccompanied sonatas, but left the mood music of form analysis unmentioned. In the comparative study of four solo sonatas for viola, the author referred to basic concepts such as: phonetic sequence II, chord classification, determination of the root, and harmonic sonority; then applies these concepts to do the analogy analysis of spectrum extracted from four unaccompanied sonatas. From the analogy study, we can read the extinguished influences by tradition such as: Interval value, the importance of the root, as well as a wealth of expression; meanwhile, the chord classification 、 chord progression and harmonic sonority, reflect Hindemith’s own theories prominently, we can see a high combination of his own theory and practice. This paper consists of five chapters: The first chapter introduces background 、 research content、frame and methods. The second chapter writes about how the growing-up experience influences Hindemith’s work. The third focuses on music analysis of the 4 Unaccompanied Sonatas, including background and comparative analysis of musical structure. The fourth chapter is the main part, it unfolds the comparative analysis of 4 sonatas in terms of similarity、difference、and spirit of time, finally leads to conclusion. The fifth part is the conclusion of the whole paper.
