The rapid economic development causes a lot of problems e.g. fast growing population,resource shortages and environmental pollution so that people gradually realize theimportance of sustainable development. Liaoning province depends on its resource to sustainthe economic growth, which leads to the huge pressure of environment degradation andresource shortage. Therefore, it has to maintain its fast economic development andharmonious society with consideration of population, environmental and resource factors.In this paper, a comprehensive measure of time-space for regional sustainabledevelopment in Liaoning province was conducted in order to analyze the integrateddual-dimensional space-time in Liaoning province. First, the evaluation index system ofsustainable development and a compressive spatial-temporal model were designed withmethods of GIS, AHP and gravity displacement to compressively analyze the sustainabledevelopment in Liaoning province. Second, the characteristics and patterns of spatialstructure were analyzed based on the result of sustainable development evaluation inLiaoning. Finally, the policy recommendation was proposed for Liaoning sustainabledevelopment. The conclusions were shown as follow:(1) For comprehensive evaluation on regional sustainable development, during2000-2012, the coordination of sustainable development relatively reflected positivedevelopment trend throughout the whole cities of Liaoning Province, but the level ofregional differences had the ups and downs, which indicates that the economic, social andecological coordinated development have certain deterioration trends. The comprehensivecapacity for sustainable development in Liaoning Province reflected positive developmenttrend. Most of cities showed some upward trend of development, but these cities showedlimiting capacity to sustain their development in the future and intensive fluctuations. Theeconomic and ecological sustainability index was relatively high in most cities, while thesocial indicators had relative low level, which meant that economic and ecological wasdominant, but the community was weak. Thus, the positive d evelopment on the surfaceactually was a relative unsound mode of development. It was not conducive to long-termstability for the regional sustainable development.(2) Based on analysis of the spatial structure, during2000-2012year, the southeastern region of Liaoning province was relative high density on the degree of sustainabledevelopment and coordination. This area had better coordination, which meant its economic,social and ecological simultaneously developed. This area showed strong capacity a nd fastspeed for development.(3) Liaoning Province must adhere to the new industrialization, adjust the economicspace, build a resource-saving society, optimize the industrial structure, strengthen humanresources development, develop the circular economy, develop modern agriculture, andestablish an effective mechanism for ecological protection measures, and so on in order toultimately achieve regional strategies for sustainable development.In this paper, on the one hand, it provides research ideas and methods on thecomprehensive measurement of time-space for the regional sustainable development,enriching the system of regional sustainable development research, which has an importanttheoretical significance. On the other hand, it can provide a scientific basis for the foundationof the regional sustainable development strategies of Liaoning Province and throughout thenortheast old industrial base, which has an important practical significance.
