In recent years, the development and construction of high-speed rail has been grown extremely fast. As the inauguration of high-speed rail from Bejing to Tianjin in2008, high-speed rail has been adopted throughout China. Meanwhile, the environmental impact of high-speed rail more and more arises. This paper discusses the short-term impact of high-speed rail on ecology environment by using modified back-propagation (BP) artificial neural network (ANN). In this paper, the status, goal, and method of present research works on this topic are reviewed. A short term evaluation model of high-speed rail on environmental impact was created, and the consequence of the long term impact analyzed. The history and development of ANN is also introduced, with the emphasis on BP ANN theory and its applications in high-speed rail environmental analysis. In this paper, through the study and investigation on environmental impact of existing and operating high-speed rail projects, an evaluation model system is constructed. A three level forward feedback ANN model of short-term environmental impact of high-speed rail is established based on modified BP ANN. The modified BP ANN is based on traditional LM algorithm, combining gradient method and Gauss-Newton iterative method. The convergence speed and accuracy are much improved by this modification. Using Chang Yi city rail as a sample, the created modified BP ANN model is used to analysis the environmental impact of this construction project. This validation process justifies that our modified BP ANN model is valid, since the model output is an objectively valid and accurate result. For long-term prediction, this paper analyzes the long-term environmental impact of high-speed rail by investigating past rail accidents and cases in China. Suggestions and recommendations are given for high-speed rail route selections in order to avoid impact of natural hazard.
