Translated by Xu Shou and John Fryer, Hua Xue Jian Yuan systematically introduced the western inorganic chemistry knowledge into China for the first time. It is one of the most representative works of China’s modern chemical translation, and an important literature to study the history of China’s modern chemistry, which has great effect on the modern chemical education, the naming of chemical nomenclature, and the writing of chemical textbooks.This paper was written mainly by the methods of document analysis and comparative analysis to discuss the spread and influence of Hua Xue Jian Yuan in the late Qing Dynasty, from which we can further deepen the understanding of Chinese chemical modernization, including the understanding of Chinese modern chemistry discipline construction, the chemical nomenclature building process and the chemical industry start-up, through analyzing the content of Hua Xue Jian Yuan, its original version and other chemical translations at the same time.This paper can be divided into seven parts.The introduction briefly introduced the basis and significance of this selected topic. By concluding the present research findings on Hua Xue Jian Yuan achievement, the ignored aspect was also regarded as the breakthrough point of this paper. In addition, research methods and innovative points were discussed in this part.The first chapter of this paper carried on the summary of Hua Xue Jian Yuan, establishing the foundation for the following research. This chapter can be divided into two sections. Section one introduced its original author and translator. Section two analyzed the background of its translation and spread.The specific research of the whole content of Hua Xue Jian Yuan was in the second chapter of this paper. This chapter can be divided into four sections, including the principles of inorganic chemistry, the knowledge of nonmetallic elements, the knowledge of metallic elements, and chemical apparatus.Based on the research of the former two parts, the third chapter of this paper discussed the translation methods of Hua Xue Jian Yuan. This chapter can be divided into two sections. Section one carried on the comparative study of the context between Hua Xue Jian Yuan and its original version to analyze the choice and deletion of its original version. Section two analyzed the translation of chemical nomenclature, including the general translation methods of chemical nomenclature, the naming of chemical elements and compounds.The fourth chapter of the paper researched the communication of Hua Xue Jian Yuan in the late Qing Dynasty. This chapter can be divided into four sections to analyze the subject, audience, version of communication and three different communication directions of this book.The fifth chapter of the paper explored the influence of Hua Xue Jian Yuan. This chapter can be divided into four sections. Section one analyzed the influence on other chemistry translations in the same time. Section two analyzed the influence on the chemical nomenclature building process. Section three analyzed the influence on Chinese modern chemistry discipline construction and the chemistry education. Section four analyzed the influence on the chemical industry start-up in the late Qing Dynasty.Concluding the whole paper, the conclusion emphasized on the deep influence of the translation and communication of Hua Xue Jian Yuan.
