Over the past century, the research on Dickens's works has already developedacademic criteria which are comparatively rigorous, and shown pluralistic trend. However the existing investigation still wants the in-depth study of the mostcharacteristic humor technique of the narrative art in Dickens's novels. The writerholds that Dickens not only exhibits his adept in the classic comedy techniquecompletely, but also invents something unique in terms of the employment of thecrafting humor. From his novels, we can recognize that humor is no longer just thesource of happiness, moreover it can often become the weapon of critique, and it mayeven carry some tragic details in his later writings. Just out of my own predilection, inthe paper I will probe into the exertion of the humor skill in Dickens's novels and itseffects on the basis of humor theory, starting with his three earlier novels, which areThe Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist and The Old Curiosity Shop, from threeperspectives respectively—the happiness in the comic humor, the attack of coldhumor and the sentimental feeling underneath the aggressive humor, whereby I shallevaluate the characters in Dickens's writings afresh, and put forward some insightsthat differ from the traditional verdicts.
