| Since the introduction of the construct of personal meaning by Frankl(1963) and Maddi(1970), considerable attention has been given to the measurement of personal meaning. Specifically, the thorny problem of how to define and operationalize personal meaning has been addressed. These attempts have resulted in a diverse set of conceptual definitions and measuring instrument, each reflecting the theoretical orientation of the researcher. This paper was to explore a structure of personal meaning about college students in our country on the Wong's (1998) Personal Meaning Profile. An open-ended questionnaire was administered to college students. The statements were gathered as to the possible sources of meaning in life. These statements were then analyzed according to their content and the 10 derived sources of meaning were added to Wong's PMP, which already deleted some items that does not suit to the Chinese students, to become the PMP-China with a total of 63 items. Then, the PMP-China was administered to the college students, after analysis, there comes out of ten factors: Achievement, General Relationships, Fair Treatment, Striving , Belief, Family, Intimate Relationships, Self-Transcendence , Self-Acceptance, Happiness. General scale has good consistency reliability and the coefficient is 0.930. Sub-scales also have good consistency reliability, the Cronbach a for the subscale of PMP respectively are: Achievement (0.887), General Relationship(0.882), Fair Treatment (0.787) , Striving (0.807) , Belief (0.710) , Family(0.736 ), Intimate Relationship (0.732 ), Self-Transcendence(0.748 ) , Self-acceptance(0.639), Happiness(0.710) . And after the analysis, 17 items were deleted, the 46 remainder items composed the Modified PMP-China. After verification, the questionnaire has good structural validity and criterion-related validity. In the end, the Modified PMP-China was administered to the college students, after analysis, in general, the meaning of our college students is high. More than half students have the higher meaning, only a few students can't find their personal meaning. Factors such as gender, grade, single or have brother/sister, major and geographic area can be of certain effects on the personal meaning of college students. |
