Based on the principle of compound pendulum, design a highly accurate measurement system of the moment of inertia which was safe, reliable and easy to operate to test the rotational inertia of rotator. The measurement method for rotary inertia was described, and the calculation formulaes of the rotary inertia were deduced. On the assumption that the errors of all measured parameters obey normal distribution, the error formulaes of measured results were deduced, and the factors influencing measurement accuracy were analyzed.At the premise of the measurement accuracy can meet the engineering requirements, the change law between the main parameters and the relative error of the inertia were discussed. A new method of dividing measurement range of the system was proposed on the basis of controlling the main parameters of the moment of inertia. And the effective measuring ranges were obtained by Matlab, meanwhile, its reliability was verified by experiment tests.In order to reduce the mass and improve the measurement accuracy of the system, topology optimization analysis for structure of the system and rigidity check of the optimized structure were finished with the finite element software ANSYS Workbench.
