Intellectuals in the early years of the Republic of China are the most outstanding and shining class in China's history in 20th Century. They went through the Revolution of 1911 led by Dr Sun Yat-sen which overthrew the Qing Dynasty, and began to diversify. This article aims to make an initial exploration about the social transition at the beginning of 20th Century, the struggle of the intellectuals, the choices the new intellectuals made during the years of the Republic of China and the choices the traditional intellectuals made at that time, based on the intellectual issue, especially based on the simple evaluation about modern intellectuals research state and what they got and lost. The writer believes that the intellectuals in the early years of the Republic of China had a far-reaching influence on politics, life style and customs of the modern society; they played a key role in the social spirits. The comparatively open social circumstance provided a favorable condition for the intellectuals of this time to have multiple choices, but at the same time, it also set an unavoidable limit line.
