Objective:To investigate the difference of osteoprotegerin between primary osteoporosis and diabetic osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.Method:Subjects were postmenopausal women with more than5years since menopause, on the basis of diabetes and osteoporosis, subjects were separated into four groups, the osteoporosis group with diabetes, the non-osteoporosis group with diabetes, the osteoporosis group without diabetes, the non-osteoporosis group without diabetes. Serum OPG was measured by enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay(ELISA). BMD was measured at the posteroanterior lumbar spinel-4by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Results:(1) OPG levels in the osteoporosis group without diabetes were higher than the non-osteoporosis group without diabetes(4.46±0.56pmol/l vs3.38±0.56pmol/l, P<0.01).(2) OPG levels in the osteoporosis group with diabetes were higher than the non-osteoporosis group with diabetes(7.46±0.83pmol/l vs6.48±0.76pmol/l, P (0.01).(3) OPG levels in the osteoporosis group with diabetes were higher than the osteoporosis group without diabetes(7.46±0.83pmol/l vs4.46±0.56pmol/l, P<0.01).(4) OPG levels in the non-osteoporosis group with diabetes were higher than the non-osteoporosis group without diabetes(6.48±0.76pmol/l vs3.38±0.56pmol/l, P<0.01).(5) There were positive correlation between OPG and FPG, HbAlc R2=0.83,0.73, there were significant difference(P<0.05).Conclusion:Postmenopausal women with diabetes and those suffered from osteoporosis have elevated level of serum OPG, the osteoporosis group with diabetes has higher level of serum OPG, the results indicated that OPG play an important role in diabetic osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Determination of serum OPG can be used for the prediction of osteoporosis. The HbAlc of the osteoporosis group with diabetes were higher than the non-osteoporosis group, which reflected that the control condition of diabetes associated with osteoporosis in diabetics.
