The idiom is a kind of fixed phrases, which has concise form, colorful meaning and long history in Chinese. It can be regarded as an epitome of Chinese traditional culture since it comes from a variety of sources. The structure of idiom is so complex that it has been treated as emphasis and difficulty in TCFL(Teaching Chinese as a second language) for many years. Do well in idiom teaching and learning for TCFL would have a lot of benefits. On one hand,it will improve the students’Chinese. On the other hand, it will transmit Chinese Culture and have a benefit for the international promotion of Chinese.Based on the Beijing Language and Culture University HSK dynamic composition corpus,this thesis conducts a comprehensive investigation for the phrasal misapplication of idioms, evaluating from formal, semantic, syntactic and pragmatic. It also analyses characteristics and reasons of error, and puts forward some suggestions according to the error analysis.This paper is divided into five sections:The first section mainly introduces the background of research, the status of research,the content of research and the significance of research.The second section analyses the error type used in Chinese idioms by foreign students.Based on the HSK,the section divides the errors made by foreign students into two categories:misuse and absence.The misuse also includes a series of classes,for example,the written form,semantic,syntactic,pragmatic and so on.The third section focuses on the causes of errors by foreign students from objective and subjective aspects,which is shown through the structure of idioms,outlines,textbooks, dictionaries,the cultural difference between foreign students and the teaching methods.The fourth section put forward some suggestions to the idiom teaching in TCFL.It mainly contains four sections:make a reasonable arrangement proportion of idioms in the outline,dictionaries and foreign language textbooks, do the specific teaching according to the idiom type,classify teaching course aimed at students from different stages and different nations,transform the traditional teaching methods and so on.The fifth section is the conclusion which summary the content and indicate the shortcomings.
