Six Chapters of a Floating Life(《浮生六记》) is a record of lifestyle, a precious workwhich deals with personal life of an official in the Qing Dynasty. It is precious for itsdepiction of merry-sad life events, its rare emphasis on personal feelings rather than carefor the worldly world. Lin Yutang’s translation version is very successful among Englishreaders. This thesis aims to discuss and evaluate Lin’s translation of culture-loaded wordsin his version. This paper starts with literature review in which the author studies the characteristicsof the original Chinese book, the translational achievement and concept of Lin Yutang. The author continues with definition and classification of culture-loaded words. From theperspective of the original text, the paper discusses the most typical types of culture-loadedwords in Six Chapters of a Floating Life. Then the paper analyses three most typical categories of culture-loaded words in SixChapters of a Floating Life. The main parts discuss translation of culture-loaded words according to the translationstrategies Lin uses. The author tries to pull readers back to when Lin was translating thebook, in order to help understand his choice of different strategies. In the final part, the essay concludes that Lin Yutang is keen on the usage of literaltranslation as a way of preserving images and information. In cases where he cannot usethis method, he adopts substitution and paraphrasing, while annotation is scarcely used.
