With the development of diversification and personalization of travel style, the position oftourist map is more and more lofty. And this is more obvious to self-help travelers when hewants a map with his own route or the space-time information of destination. However, theexisting tourist maps couldn’t meet this need for the same design and redundant contents.Cartographers and web-service companies drove away at an adaptive tourist map servicesystem to meet the users’ individual need in the practical travel. But at present, it hasn’t beentrue. On the other hand, a common user had so many troubles in handling a professionalcartographic or GIS software to generate a requisite map by himself. So, the conception ofautonomous design for personalized tourist map is prompted up in this paper, and research iscarried out on academic and technology view.Firstly, the conceptions and correlations between personalization, standardization andpopularization are discussed. After the characters and developing status of personalized servicebeing introduced, conceptions related to the personalized service provided by map products arepresented to. Based on this, personalized map is focused on by its conception, classification andexecution mode. A new execution mode is invented comparing with the old ones, and the flowof it is shown tentatively.Secondly, the conception, characters, classification and visualized expression content ofpersonalized tourist map are analyzed. Then, design requirements and rules of symbols coding ofpersonalized tourist map are concluded. Especially, point symbols of thematic elements abovebase map elements are improved by a series of self-designed cognition experiments. As a result,a set of coding list is implemented in order to provide an autonomous visualized design methodfor a personalized tourist map.Thirdly, the series of cognition experiments are especially particularized in this part for itsimportance, which consists of questionnaire and eye movement tracking methods. Some designdirections to the symbols visual coding of personalized tourist map are expected. Fortunately, theimprovement on the point symbols design and coding under it can solve the problems mentionedat the beginning of this paper.Moreover, it is innovative that thematic elements overlay base map to make a compositepersonalized tourist map quickly and easily. To validate this, the personalized tourist mapdesign system facing general users is carried out.Eventually, after the fruit and deficiency of this research being concluded, the latter studyemphases are planned also.
