Spiral bevel gear transmission devices are usually used to transmit the power betweentwo staggered or two intersecting axes, which have been extensively applied in many fields,such as ship, marine, aviation, automobile and all kinds of precision machine tools, with itsadvantages of high overlap coefficient, large transmission ratio, low transmission noise, andhigh capacity. At present, there are two machining methods for spiral bevel gears, machiningwith special machining tools and special NC machining tools. And special NC machiningtools have been widely used for spiral bevel gear abroad. However, the special NC machiningtools in our country used to rely on the import because there is still a large gap in the researchcapacity about the numerical control processing technology and the machining technology ofspiral bevel gear is blockaded by the developed countries. How to realize high precision, highefficiency and low cost machining for spiral bevel gear with general NC machining tools is akey issue for getting rid of the backward situation of domestic spiral bevel gear machining.Thus, it is an urgent to do some researches on NC programming and simulation technologyfor spiral bevel gear. Therefore, with the help of the homogeneous coordinate transformationtheory, the spatial meshing principle, tooth surface forming principle, the CAD software UGand its second development language OPEN/GRIP,NC machining simulation softwareVERICUT and VC++language, the machining tool path planning and related post processingalgorithm, numerical control machining theory as theories and tools, the following efforts inthis paper are focus on tooth profile equation deduction, entity modeling establishing, toolpath planning, post processing solution, machining process simulation. The specific work canbe summarized as follows:1) Based on the homogeneous coordinate transformation theory and the spatial meshingprinciple, tooth profile equations of the big and small gears have been deduced, and based onthe above work the solid models of them are established by using Matlab and OPEN/GRIPprogramming, and then their virtual assembly and motion simulation have been finished withUG/Assembly to verify gears modeling algorithms;2) Cutter locations of two gears are calculated by using the CL section method and thesecond development tool OPEN/GRIP. And then the cutter location files are generated fromthe cutter locations data;3) After analyzing machining features of spiral bevel gear, the scheme and the structureof NC machining tools for spiral bevel gears are designed. And its three-dimensional modelsare built with the help of UG. And then NC machining virtual machine is established in VERICUT environment by importing the above models.4) The post processor for NC machining tools of spiral bevel gear is developed inVC++. Then the cutting processes of two gears of spiral bevel gear are simulated inVERICUT in order to verify the rationality of the machining tools structure and the validity ofthe post processor.In conclusion, the researches in this paper provide an effective way to establish thesolution scheme of spiral bevel gear NC machining, and lay a theoretical foundation for theenhancement of the NC machining technology level of the domestic spiral bevel gear.
