Polydicyclopentadiene has good balance of mechanical performance, for example,higher impact strength, tensile strength and higher modulus in wide temperature range.However, flammability of PDCPD limits its application of in many fields.Using chlorinated polypropylene (CPP)、chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), andthe antimony trioxide(Sb2O3) as fire retardant, the flame retarded PDCPD wereprepared by reaction injection molding (RIM) technic. The structure and properties ofmodified PDCPD were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), tensiletesting machine, impact testing machine, oxygen index apparatus, etc.The test resultsshow that the modified PDCPD can not only improve the mechanical properties,butalso have modified fire resistance at the same time.The compatibility of binary composites for PDCPD/CPP and PDCPD/CPE wascharacteriaed by SEM. The results showed that the aggregation morphology of CPP、CPE was not found in the composite matrix, andproved that the linear molecules ofCPP、CPE are well dispersed in matrix. The fracture surface of samples has obviouscharacteristics of ductile fracture.The results of tensile test and impact test showed that the mechanics performanceof the modified PDCPD increased firstly and then decreased along with increasingCPP and CPE content respectively. The mechanics performance for the PDCPD/CPPcomposites with6%CPP was best, in which the tensile properties and impactproperties were increased by84%and31%respectively compared with the purePDCPD. The mechanics performance for the PDCPD/CPE composites with3%CPEwas best, in which the tensile properties and impact properties were increased by80%and34%respectively compared with the pure PDCPD. The mechanical properties forthe ternary composites tend to decline after adding Sb2O3.The high temperature pyrolysis for tow binary composites shows that the char yield of the composites can be improved by CPP and CPE, and were more obvious forternary composites after adding Sb2O3, compared with pure PDCPD.The best results of horiaontal and vertical burning in all composites reach to FH-2for highest horizontal combustion level and FV-0for the highest vertical combustionlevel respectively. The oxygen index(OI) test shows that PDCPD/CPP/Sb2O3withmole ratio of Sb/Cl is1:2, is highest, in which the OI is increased by18%comparedwith the pure PDCPD. For PDCPD/CPP/Sb2O3, the mole ratio of Sb/Cl is1:3is best,in which the OI is increased by22%.A large composite flat of PDCPD was prepared by industrialization using theprocess parameters of the experiments. And the process condition of PDCPD-RIM wasoptimized, and the problem of the products’ defect was preliminary solved.
