Being part of the vehicle family, mining dump truck has many differences from on-road cars because of its special use conditions. Mining dump truck carries heavy capacity and although its speed is not very high, vehicle safety issues are particularly important due to poor driving environment. The braking system is a critical system to ensure safety of the vehicles. Brakes are important components for achieving braking performance. This article first describes the type of braking system and brake structure, and puts emphasis on the brakes used on small tonnage mining dump truck. According to the basic theory of brakes, different vehicle driving conditions are analyzed to establish a mathematical model of brake performance; formulas of braking torque and the effect of synchronous adhesion coefficient on braking torque distribution are derived. Moreover, through theoretical derivation, the effects of secondary braking on the distribution of braking torque and braking performance of the vehicle are analyzed. In this paper, taking a small tonnage mining dump truck Model D45as the research object, the front and rear brake torque distribution is determined based on the derived formula, so as to determine the types of the brakes of D45; and the mathematical model of braking performance is deduced based on theoretical derivation; the design of braking systems is conducted using MATLAB software; and the braking performances of the primary brake, parking brake, emergency brake and the retarder as an auxiliary brake are simulated, respectively; and the results of braking performance simulated are analyzed; the effect of the retarder as an auxiliary brake on the overall vehicle braking system matching calculations is analyzed. Finally, the braking information and data are obtained following QC/T75-1998and GB/T21152-2007and thus the basic vehicle braking performance is learned. The result of the braking performance calculation is verified by tests; the tests on vehicle braking performance include primary brake, emergency brake, parking brake and so on; a comparison is made with the braking performance of the vehicle using a hydraulic retarder, and thus a theoretical basis is provided for future designs through tests on the sample vehicle.
