With the development of the technical equipment and control technology in the industrial production, the domestic steel industry is developing rapidly in recent years, and high quality steel production is increasing. Thus, improving product quality, increasing the utilization rate of the existing resources, improving the product yield and reducing production cost become the ultimate strategy of future survival of a steel enterprise. For the roughing process in hot strip mill, by the application of continuous casting and continuous rolling, the incoming hot rolled slab mostly use continuous casting slab. However the continuous casting slab has the problem of on-line width adjustment, so the edger mill usually to be set in the rough rolling area. Width adjustment and control are achieved through the side reduction of the edger. But the non-uniform deformation of the slab head and tail as well as the edge caused by edger rolling will cause a large number of losses of cutting head and cutting tail. This will not only reduce the width precision, but also reduce the product yield. The short stroke control can compensate the width reduction caused by the edger rolling, and can reduce the head and tail cutting loss effectively. In this paper, edger rolling and the subsequent flat rolling process are simulated using the dynamic explicit method with finite element analysis software ANSYS/LS-DYNA. The main content of the study are as follows:(1) The related theory of finite element method is elaborated, and basic theory of dynamic explicit elastic-plastic finite element is mainly introduced. A simulation model of slab edging-rolling process using the finite element analysis software ANSYS/LS-DYNA is set up.(2) The edger rolling process is simulated, the slab deformation characteristics and metal flow laws are analysed and the effect of side reduction, edging roll diameter, slab thickness and width on the dog-bone cross section of the slab as well as the flat shape are studied.(3) The flat rolling process subsequently is simulated, the slab cross-section shape and head and tail shape under different conditions are analysed and the effect of side reduction, thickness reduction, slab thickness and width on width spread and flat shape are studied. (4) The edging-rolling process of the slab with short stroke control on the basis of short stroke control theory is simulated, and the effect of short stroke control is studied.
