According to statistics released by WHO, humans infected with the highly pathogenicavian influenza virus H5N1has a high mortality rate of approximately60%. Drugresistance and lack of effective treatment pose the pressing problems for currentsituation. The severe threats to humans make urgent need for research and developmentof new drugs and effective countermeasures.Solanum surattense Burm is a plant of the Solanum family. In previous study, we havefound that the extract from the aerial parts of Solanum surattense show potent anti avianinfluenza virus (H5N1) activity on madin darby canine kidney cells model. In ongoingresearch on antivirus constituents from this plant, the ethanol extract of the plant wassubjected to chromatographic purification and isolation, forty two compounds wereisolated so far. Thirty three of them were determined by physicochemical properties andspectral methods, and elucidated as1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene (1),3-methylphydroxy-benzoic acid (2), maltol (3), N-trans-feruloyltyramine (4),3,4,5-trimethoxyphenol (5),syringaresinol (6), syringic acid (7),3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (8), coniferyl alcohol(9), N-p-trans-coumaroyltyramine (10),2,3-dihydroxy-1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphen-yl)-propan-1-one (11), yamogenin6-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(lâ†'3)-β-D-glucopyranosi-de (12), evofolin B (13), balanophonin (14),3-indoleformic acid (15),1,2-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1,3-propanediol (16), simulanol (17), glycosmisic acid (18),neochlorogenin (19),1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-2-{4-[(E)-3-hydroxy-1-propen-yl]-2-methoxyphenoxy}-1,3-propanediol (20), p-hydroxybenzoic acid (21), tribulusam-ide A (22), caffeic acid (23), sucrose (24), solagenin6-O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(lâ†'3)-β-D-quinovopyranoside (25), neochlorogenin6-O-β-D-quinovopyranoside (26), neochlor- ogenin6-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(lâ†'3)-β-D-quinovopyranoside (27), neochloroge-nin6-O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(lâ†'3)-β-D-quinovopyranoside (28),2-propylcyclopentanecar-boxylate6-O-β-D-apiofuranosyl-(lâ†'6)-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (29), β-sitosterol (30),daucosterol(31), neochlorogenin6-O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(lâ†'3)-β-D-glucopyranoside(32),(3β,5α,6α,25S)-26-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-3,6,26-trihydroxy-20,22-secofurostane-20,22-dione6-O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1â†'3)-β-D-quinovopyranoside (33). Compound29and33were new compounds. Compounds3,11,13,14,16-18and20were isolatedfrom this genus for the first time. Compounds1,2,4-10,12,15,19,21-28and32wereobtained from this plant for the first time.Compound5,7and12showed potent antivirus activity in Madin Darby Canine Kidneycells infected with H5N1subtype, while without apparent toxicity to cells, at dose of150.0μg/mL,300.0μg/mL and75.0μg/mL, respectively.
