Researches On Hakka Cultural Self-consciousness During Modernization

Hakka culture has a long history, originated from the Heluo culture of centralplains. Due to the reason of inhabiting a relatively severe and closed area, ancestorsof Hakka had continuously enriched and deepened their culture, during the severalhistorical migrations. Today,30years after China’s reform and opening up, it israther important for Hakkas in Meizhou, Guangdong，to discuss the meaning andmethods for “cultural awareness” during their own modernization, standing at thefrontier of this movement. The sixth plenary session of the17th Central Committee ofthe Communist Party of China gives out the point that a highly cultural awarenessand confidence should be cultivated for the construction of a communistcountry with Chinese characteristics, that the soft power of culture should beenhanced, and the accomplishment and booming of socialist culture be achieved.Therefore, to glorify the Hakka specialty under the unity in diversity, to uphold theuniqueness of Hakka culture is among the issues of manifesting the richness anddiversity of Chinese cultures.Firstly, this paper defines the theories and concepts related to the presentresearch, and then an overall clarification is made about the present situation ofHakka culture in Meizhou as well as its difficulties in the modernization. Afterwards,a historical angle sees the communication and interaction among Hakkas and theirneighbors, which clarifies the origin of Hakka cultures and how they dealt with thecross-cultural relationships in those days. The last part is a comprehensive analysis ofthe hints of Hakka cultural awareness with the background of modernization, seekingfor a solution to maintaining its uniqueness when it also has to quicken its ownmodernization. Only through the development of Hakkas culture conforming to thetide of cultural diversity, steadying itself, and being cultural awake and conscious,can Hakka fulfill the dream of being self-confident and strong in cultures.Hakka culture has a brilliant history. That to maintain its vigor and prosperity, toglorify and integrate into other cultures, depends on how to carry out Hakka culturalawareness and its extent and effect, confronted with diversities of various culturesduring China’s modernization.
