Tancheng, a county of Linyi City, is situated in the southernmost part of Shandong Province. Linguistically speaking, Jiao-Liao Mandarin, Jiang-Huai Mandarin as well as Zhengcao and Luoxu subparts of Zhongyuan Mandarin converge here, and Tancheng dialect belongs to Western Shandong dialect, which is part of the Shandong dialect. In recent years, with the development of nationwide dialects investigation, many scholars have studied the features of Tancheng dialect in their papers from different perspectives.This thesis refers to the Questionnaire of Characters for Dialect Surveys (Revised version) and takes Tancheng dialect as its research objective. On the basis of the field survey method, this thesis also adopts case study method, sample survey method as well as synchronic and diachronic comparative methods to give a comprehensive analysis of Tancheng dialect and then demonstrates the specificity and internal differences of Tancheng dialect’s phonetic system.This thesis consists of six chapters. The first chapter is the introduction part which mainly introduces the geography, population and historical development of Tancheng County, generalizes the achievements made in the study of Tancheng dialect and points out the significance of research on Tancheng dialect; the second chapter describes the phonetic system of Tancheng dialect; the third chapter mainly illustrates the homonyms in Tancheng dialect; the fourth chapter adopts the diachronic comparative method to generalize the evolution law of Tancheng dialect in terms of tone, rhyme and accent; the fifth chapter describes the specific internal differences of Tancheng dialect in tone, rhyme and accent; the last chapter investigates the evolution of initials for Round-mouth Characters of Zhi-system in Tancheng dialect from the sociolinguistic perspective.
