Study On The Relations Between Energy Consumption, Carbon Emissions And Economic Growth Of Chongqing

In 2003, in the UK energy white paper Our Energy Future: Creating Low Carbon Economy, The words low carbon were been mentioned firstly. Today, low carbon economy has become a hot topic in the world, which has prompted a new round of reform of our country’s extensive economy in the past. Since Chongqing became the Direct-controlled municipality, rapid economic development of Chongqing is closely relative to energy. To recognize the relations between and among energy consumption,carbon emissions and economic growth and promote economic growth are of great significance.After summarizing the theory of sustainable development, Energy, Economic and Environmental(3E) system theory, Environment Kuznets Curve and related theoretical basis, this paper describes the current status of energy consumption and economic growth in Chongqing, and measures carbon emissions in Chongqing with carbon emission coefficient released by Board of Science and Technology. Then,this paper studies the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth in Chongqing with VECM, Granger causality test. And, the paper also study on the relationship between the carbon dioxide emissions and economic growth in Chongqing with Tapio decoupling method. Finally a vector auto-regressive model is built and Granger causality test is used to study and verify the relationship between energy consumption, carbon emissions and economic growth in the short and long run.Based on the real data, the study finds that energy consumption, carbon emissions and economy in Chongqing is still growing, coal consumption is still taking a greater proportion.. Energy consumption has a significant influence on promoting economic growth in Chongqing, so economic growth in Chongqing is dependent on energy. In the eight decoupling relationships, the decoupling relationship between carbonemissions and economic growth in Chongqing belongs to weak decoupling most of the time, and does not appear strong decoupling. The change of carbon dioxide has no obvious effect on economic growth.Based on the special relationship of the energy consumption, carbon dioxide, and economic growth in Chongqing, Chongqing economic development can not blindly savw energy, but should pay attention to control of the carbon emissions.
