With the increase of refining products from the petrochemical industry, the total production of oily sludge increases yearly, of which the tank bottom oily sludge is characterized by high oil content and moisture content, harmful and hard to process. If the tank bottom oily sludge is stacked or discharge directly, it will not only cause serious pollution to the environment, but also cause a waste of resources. Catalytic pyrolysis is one of the reducing and recycling technology to process the tank bottom oily sludge, which arouses wide concern currently. This paper adopts the experimental method and makes use of the catalytic pyrolysis technology to study the basic characteristic of the tank bottom oily sludge and the quality of pyrolytic oil.This paper studies the typical tank bottom oily sludge from a refinery in northern Taiwan with catalytic pyrolysis technology, using various equipments such as Element Analyzer, X Ray Diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Gas Chromatograph, which aims at introducing the research on the characteristics of oily sludge catalytic pyrolysis and the methods of promoting the quality of pyrolytic oil. The experiment is classified by four different catalyst adding proportions and five different pyrolysis temperatures, and then each experimental result is analyzed to achieve the best catalytic adding ratio and pyrolysis temperature, which obtains the highest rate of recovery and production, and also the best quality of the pyrolytic oil.The result shows that, with the increase of the catalytic adding ratio, the rate of recovery and production increases, the corresponding catalytic adding ratio of the highest recovery and production is 10 wt.%. Others, with the increase of the temperature, the rate of recovery and production increases first and then decreases, and the corresponding temperature of the highest recovery and production is 600℃. The water content of pyrolytic oil reaches the lowest yield at 550℃ and 10 wt.%. The O/C ratio of pyrolytic oil will decrease to 0.02~0.06 at 700℃ and 15 wt.%, which contributes to reducing pyrolytic oil aging. Meanwhile, the viscosity of pyrolytic oil will reduce to the minimum value that is similar to the diesel and fuel oil. Adding catalyst contributes to promoting the heating value in the process of oily sludge pyrolysis. With the increase of catalytic adding ratio, the content of the oxygen and ring compounds presents a trend of increase, which contributes to upgrading the quality of pyrolytic oil.
