The genus Asparagus, comprising about300species, is widely distributed in temperate and tropical area except America. There are24species growing in the reagions of North and South of China. Many species of this genus are famous ornamental plants. Except their ornamental value, the roots of Asparagus also widely be used to treat fever, cough, kidney diseases, and benign breast tumors in China since ancient times. Previously, some monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, polysaccharides, steroidal saponins and phenolic compounds were reported from this genus. This thesis comprises four chapters altogether. The first chapter presents a review on the chemical constituents and bioactivities of the plants of the genus of Asparagus. The second chapter deals with the isolation and determination of the chemical constituents of Asparagus cochinchinensis. The third chapter reported activites screening to six isolated compounds. And in the last chapter, summary of this dissertation is made.By the means of chromatographic methods and spectroscopic evidences,24compounds were isolated from A. cochinchinensis. There are11new compounds including four new C-21pregnane glycosides, one new C-22pregnane aglycon, three new C-22pregnane glysodies including a couple of isomer of C-22pregnane glycosides, and3new C-27steroidal saponin. Their structures were identified as following respectively.(25S)-26-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-5β-furostan-3β,22α,26-triol-12-one-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (1),(25S)-26-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-5β-furostan-3β,26-diol-22-α-methoxy-12-one-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (2),(25S)-5β-sprostane-3β-ol-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1,2)-β-D-glucopyranoside(9),3β-dihydryoxy-5β-pr-egn-16-en-20-one-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1,4)-β-D-glucopyranoside(16),3β-dih-y dryoxy-5β-pregn-16-en-20-one-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1,2)-β-D-glucopyranos-ide(17),3β-hydry-oxy-5β-pregn-16-en-20-one-3-O-α-L-ar-abinosyl-(1,2)-β-D-gluco-pyranoside(18),3β-hydryoxy-5β-pregn-16-en-20-one-3-O-α-L-arabinosyl-(1,2)-β-D- glucopyranosyl-(1,4)-β-D-glucopyranoside (19),(20S)-3β,16β-dihydroxy-5β-pregn-22-carboxylic acid (22,16)-lactone(20),(20)-3β,16β-dihydroxy-5β-pregn-22-carbo-xylic acid (22,16)-lactone-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (21a),(20R)-3β,16β-dihydroxy-5β-pregn-22-carboxylc acid (22,16)-lactone-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside(21b),3β,16β-dihydroxy-5β-pregn-20(21)-ene-carboxylic acid γ-lactone-3-O-α-L-rhmnopyranosyl-(1,2)-β-D-glucopyranoside(22).
