Objectives:1.To measure the road-menders’ calcaneus ultrasound parameters and know the young and middle-aged male road-menders’ bone mass in Yunnan province;2.To investigate the demographic characteristics and lifestyle of the road-menders in Yunnan province,to know the risk factors for calcaneus ultrasound parameters, reduce the risk of osteoporosis and osteoporotic fracture and improve the workers’ quality of life.Methods:1. Yunnan consists of 16 states/cities,there are 16 general highway managements of yunnan province correspondingly. Select two management section from general highway management by cluster random sampling method (a total of 32), investigate all the young and middle-aged male road-menders, a total of 548 patients, aged 20 to 64 years old.2.To measue calcaneal bone mineral density (BMD) and Quantitative Ultrasound Index (QUI) and T value with the Sahara ultrasonic BMD instrument produced by Hologic company.Calculate the average BMD, QUI and T value.They are divided into four groups by 10 years of age as an age group, the BMD, QUI and T value of each group are calculated separately to know its peak bone mass and age, and calculate the incidence of abnormal bone mass.3.To investigate the workers’ general demographic characteristics and living habits, analyze the risk factors for osteoporosis and osteoporotic fracture of the crowd.Results:1.The average BMD of the young and middle-aged male road-menders in Yunnan province was 0.497±0.135 g/cm2, average QUI was 90.104±21.766 and average T value was 0.838±1.254. The peak BMD, QUI and T value all appeares in the 20 to 29 age group, the peak value is 0.560 ± 0.194 g/cm2,100.641 ± 30.596,0.350 ± 1.773 respectively. Bone mass is normal in 302 (55.11%) workers, abnormal in 346 (44.89%)) workers.2.The single factor analysis showes that age, smoking, smoking time are negatively correlated with calcaneal BMD, QUI, minority workers’ calcaneal BMD and QUI are higher than han Chinese workers’ Calcaneal BMD, QUI value of workers with three kinds or more diseases are lower than those without other diseases.3.Multiple linear regression analysis reveales that age, smoking, people are risk factors for osteoporosis and osteoporosis fractures.Conclusions:1.The peak calcaneal BMD and QUI of the young and middle-aged male road-menders in Yunnan province appeares in the 20 to 29 age group, were 0.560±0.194 g/cm2,100.641± 30.596 respectively. Calcaneal BMD and QUI value reduces with the increasing of age. Abnormal calcaneal bone mass ratio of 44.89%.2.Age,smoking and people are independent risk factors of osteoporosis for the young and middle-aged male road-menders of Yunnan province.
