In the related study of judgment of learning (JOL), we found that comparing tothe immediate JOL, delayed JOL has a higher relative accuracy; this is the so-calleddelayed-JOL effect. This study focuses on the self-fulfilling prophecy theory (SFP)and the monitoring-dual-memories hypothesis (MDM) of delayed-JOL effect. TheSFP theory emphasized the improvement of memory performance that caused by theretrieval attempts associated with delayedjudgment., but the MDM hypothesisconsiders that the reduction of short-term memory (STM) interference causes thedelayed-JOL effect. About the SFP theory, some study that brought out thedelayed-JOL effect did not found the improvement of memory performance, whichmeans that the SFP theory was not appropriate. For the MDM hypothesis, althoughsome study found the close relation between the JOL accuracy and the short-termmemory disturbance, it was not sure that what the relation was.The present study conducted two experiments to explore the mechanism of thedelayed-JOL effect. Two experiments both were within-subject factorial design.Experiment1used the PRAM paradigm, controlled the time interval between learningand JOL (immediate/short delayed/long delayed), and explored the influence factor ofthe correlation between the memory performance and the value of JOL. Experiment2used the classic JOL research paradigm and controlled the time interval between JOLand the cued recall (30s/3min), in order to observe the causal relationship between therelative accuracy of JOL and the weakened STM disturbance.Experiments collected some index including memory performance, the value ofJOL and the relative accuracy of JOL, and conducted separately the repeatedmeasures analyses of variance andindependent-samples T test. In experiment1, theitems that has different consequences of retrieval attempt would got different value ofJOL, and the relative accuracy of JOL was closely related to the weakened STMdisturbance. In experiment2, there were difference memory performance in differentconditions, but the corresponding values of JOL and the relative accuracy of JOL hadno significant differences.Basedon theseresults, theconclusionwas thatretrieval attempts and the weakenedSTM disturbance were necessary for the mechanism of the delayed-JOL effect. In the delayed condition, the process of retrieval attempt provided important clues for JOL,the weakened STM disturbance made the correlation between this clue and memoryperformance higher at the same time, so the relative accuracy of JOL got promoted. The present findings not only found the limitation of the two mechanisms, but alsointegrated them.
