An Empirical Study Of Word Class Labeling For Monosyllabic Entries In Chinese-Russian Dictionary

Word class labeling of analytic languages like Chinese and English has been a knotty and controversial problem although a variety of studies have been made. Among all the Chinese-foreign language dictionaries, there are many studies on word class labeling in Chinese-English dictionaries, whereas few studies have been made on word class labeling of Chinese-Russian dictionaries.Chinese-Russian Dictionary is a dictionary compiled for Russian learners in China and Chinese learners in Russian, thus it is both a native-oriented and foreign-oriented dictionary. CRD is also the first Chinese-Russian dictionary which tries to label word classes for monosyllabic words. From the perspective of Two-level Word Class Categorization in Analytic Languages, with prudent statistics collected from DIY database of Chinese-Russian Dictionary and data sampled from Modern Chinese Corpus developed by the National Language Committee of China corpus(hereinafter called), this thesis does a survey on word class labeling for monosyllabic entries in CRD referring to three aspects: the distinction between words and non-words; the implementation of multiple word class membership and the treatment of the principle of Translating by Word Class. Through the study, a conclusion can be drawn like that there exist problems in the distinction between words and non-words, the implementation of heterosemy and the principle of Translating by POS in CRD. Based on Two-level Word Class Categorization in Analytic Languages, we hold that word class categorization exists both in syntax at parole and lexicon at langue, the judgment of word classes should depend on the usage survey and only those conventionalized ones can be put into dictionaries.This study can not only offer guidance for word class labeling in Chinese-foreign language dictionaries, but also shed new light for word classes in modern Chinese.
