The study of word classes in Modern Chinese has witnessed several upsurges over the last century, and in lexicography, part of speech labeling is the focus of research. In 2005, the Contemporary Chinese Dictionary(5th ed.) labeled all the lemmas with word classes, which pushes the study of word classes of Chinese to another climax, but the achievements and problems coexist. Word class labeling of Chinese foreign dictionaries is based on that of Chinese dictionaries, so the problems are more prominent. Crown Chuniqi Jiten(CCJ) selected in this study is compiled by Japanese scholars learning Chinese. In view of the lack of word class labeling research of Chinese-Japanese dictionaries, this thesis makes a survey on the word class labeling of CCJ.Based on Crown Cuniqi Jiten word class labeling database and Chinese National Corpus and in the theoretical model of Two-level Word Class Categorization in Analytic Languages, an in-depth survey of word class labeling in CCJ is conducted from the perspective of language as Complex Adaptive System theory and the Theory of Norms and Exploitations, including the three aspects of the distinction of words and non-words, the treatment of multiple class membership, and the Principle of Translating by Word Class. The results suggest that words in CCJ take on an obvious prototype effect, and the most typical words in CCJ are disyllables; that bounded by “Principle of Simplicity” and improperly applying the word class identification criterion and procedures in word class labeling, the compilers tend to minimize the number of multi-category words, resulting in the situation of “one word, one meaning and one class”; that most of the labeled lemmas obey the Principle of Translating by Word Class and those that violate the rule are mainly the adjectival ones. This study is instructive in illuminating the study of word class labeling of Chinese dictionaries and Chinese foreign dictionaries, and has academic significance for modern Chinese grammar.
