A museum is a place collecting, exhibiting, researching objects which represent the nature and cultural heritage of mankind, a carrier of historical and cultural heritage of human-beings, a important window through which the development of social civilization can be seen, also an institution providing information, knowledge, education, and satisfaction of culture and art appreciation. As with the development of our society and the deepening of reform and opening, it has become an urgent task for museums in China to get new ideas to accomplish their education mission and explore new methods to improve their management level. Considering that international communication is becoming more and more convenient and frequent nowadays, it is undoubtedly an effective and efficient way to get acquainted with the social, scientific, cultural development process of western countries and learn from their advanced management mode via translating their museum literature into Chinese. Therefore, doing researches on how to improve the English-Chinese translation level of museum literature is of great value and practical significance nowadays. However, in academia today, little effort has been made to systematically explore the translation method of museum literature, especially on English-Chinese translation. In consideration of that, I come up with the idea to do a research of this sphere on the basis of my own translation practice. As an important kind of academic writing, the Chinese translation version of museum literature should be formal, scientific, precise, as well as clear, readable and understandable. Therefore, it’s indeed a demanding job full of challenge to do the E-C translation of museum literature very well. This thesis is evolved from the perspective of the Skopostheory of German Functional Approaches, based on my own experience of translating a certain part of a museum literature—Science for the Nation:Perspectives on the History of the Science Museum from English to Chinese. The thesis includes the description of preparation work before translation, translation process and post-translation items. It is analysed from both the lexical level andthe sentential level, explaining concretely how the Skopostheory functions in the E-C translation of museum literature. I hope this thesis can help the readers get better acquainted with translation strategies and have better understanding of the application of Skopostheory in E-C translation of museum literature.
