Jiangyin is a port city of the Yangtze river and an administrative area belonging to Wuxi. Jiangyin dialect belongs to the Changzhou wu language which adjacent to taihu lake wu. Across the Yangtze river to the north of Jiangyin, people speak Jianghuai Mandarin, while people to the east, south, and west of Jiangyin speak Northern Wu dialect. The existing researches mostly focused on Jiangyin dialect pronunciation part. This paper first systematically studies on modal particles of Jiangyin dialect, by employing the theories and methods of field investigation, comparative study and dialect geography, combined with example analysis of jiangyin dialect. On the basis of description, this paper analyses the internal regional difference and age difference on modal particles of Jiangyin dialect, and compares with modal particles of Changzhou dialect and Suzhou dialect which is the northern wu representative site to find out the core characteristics of Jiangyin dialect.This paper consists of five chapters:Chapter 1 "Introduction" It covers an overview of Jiangyin geography and history, the existing research of Jiangyin dialect, the concept and classification of modal particle, the theories and methods applied in this paper,the methods of collecting linguistic data, and a brief introduction to the dialect speakers.Chapter 2 "The analysis of the single-use situation of modal particle of Jiangyin dialect" The single-use situation of modal particles be divided into two categories by syntactic distribution, including in a sentence and at the end of a sentence. The modal particles at the end of a sentence are divided by three categories. They are declarative sentence, interrogative sentence and exclamatory sentence. This chapter focuses on different usages of 15 basic modal particles, combining with examples, by adopting the form of chart to show the use status of modal particles of Jiangyin dialect.Chapter 3 "The analysis of the conjunction of modal particle of Jiangyin dialect" This chapter shows all situations of the conjunction of modal particles in Jiangyin dialect. The conjunction between two words is the most common situation in Jiangyin dialect. There are also some illustrations of conjunction among three words. And we here analyze the combination level of the conjunction of modal particles.Chapter 4 "The comparative study of modal particles in Jiangyin dialect" This chapter is about the comparative study of the modal particles in Jiangyin dialect. First of all, it is the comparison of the internal differences, including the regional difference and age difference. Secondly, it compares the different usages of modal particles of Jiangyin dialect, Suzhou dialect and Changzhou dialect. The modal particles of Chengjiang town are the most representative, and modal particles of suburban towns are affected by the neighboring cities. Compared with the old-style dialect, modal particles of the new-style dialect are close to mandarin. There are "one to one" and "one to many" corresponding relations among the modal particles of Changzhou, Suzhou and Jiangyin dialects. There are less modal particles in Jiangyin dialect than Suzhou, Changzhou and "欧" is unique in Jiangyin dialect.Chapter 5 is a summary of the whole thesis. We summarized some features of the use of the modal particles in Jiangyin dialect.
