Modal particles are a significant part in the Chinese language. Rich modal particles are an important method and play an essential role when people express out their inner heart. As scholars have been doing a deep research on dialects in recent years, many of them also began their studies on the modal particles in these dialects. Yet the studies on Zhangguying dialect, up to now, remain only on phonetics. Thus this essay will focus on modal particles in Zhangguying dialect, based on what other scholars have done on modal particles of other dialects. Zhangguying dialect is my mother tongue, so I have certain advantages of getting linguistic data. In this essay I’ll summarize a relatively complete Modal particles system of Zhangguying dialect synchronically via various research methods by studying first-hand linguistic materials, sorting out the modal particles in this dialect, illustrating with example sentences, analyzing their functions, and comparing with typical modal particles in Mandarin. This essay contains five chapters:Chapter One is the general introduction. It mainly presents the culture and geography in Zhangguying Town, the current situation of the studies on Zhangguying dialect, the history and present situation of studies on modal particles of dialects, the phonetic system of Zhangguying dialect, and the purpose, significance and study methods of this essay.Chapter Two specifically illustrates modal particles in Zhangguying dialect. Firstly is the classification of the local modal particles. In this essay, they are divided into three categories. The first is those mainly used in interrogative sentences. The second is those mainly used in non-interrogative sentences. The third is those could be used in various syntactical structures. Then based on this classification, the mood and usage of each modal particle is analyzed.Chapter Three is about the succession of modal particles in Zhangguying dialect. In this dialect, succession of two modal particles is mainly used. Some of them has stronger word-generation ability, such as "'", "嘞"; some of them have weaker word-generation ability, such as ’的", "安", etc. Succession of three modals particles is rare. It mainly appears in“''嘞”and“'吧嘞”Chapter Four is the function investigation of modal particles in Zhangguying dialect. According to Modal Particles and Mood System by Qi Huyang, there are three functions of modal particles. The first is to deliver message and interrogation. The second is to complete a sentence. The third is its textual function.Chapter Five compares the modals particles in Zhangguying dialect with those in Changsha dialect and Nanchang dialect, as Changsha dialect and Nanchang dialect are the representative dialects of Xiang Dialect and Gan Dialect, thus to find out their similarities and differences. The purpose is to provide more basis for further studies on subordinate dialects in this region.Chapter six is the conclusion part, points out the innovation of this paper and the conclusion, the shortages of this paper and some problems which need to be studied further in the future.
