China is a multi-ethnic country and the colorful ethnic culture is an important part of its profound history. However, due to historical reasons, many ethnic minorities lack writing systems of their own languages, thus the oral text has become an essential means of cultural inheritance. Therefore, the documentation of oral texts plays a very crucial part in the protection and maintenance of ethnic minority cultures.Longsheng Ge Autonomous County is a typical multi-ethnic region in which many ethnic minorities, such as Zhuang, Dong, Miao, Yao, have been living there for generations. Many oral texts with various forms, such as folktales, songs and poems, are very popular among the villages. But these texts are rarely reported and studied, thus it is necessary to invest and study these oral texts.Based on the principles of documentary linguistics, this paper makes an attempt to study the oral texts spreading in Guangnan of Longsheng Ge Autonomous County, with the focus on folk stories and songs. Specifically, the paper first analyses the linguistic characteristics of these oral texts, then it goes on to explore their historical and cultural implications as well as social functions. What’s more, the inheritance mechanism is also the target of this paper, so that some effective suggestions can be put forth to protect the oral texts.By analyzing the oral texts, it can be seen that cohesive devices, such as grammatical device, lexical device and phonetic devices are employed in a flexible way in folk stories in order to make sure that the folk stories are coherent and vivid. Grammatical devices mainly include reference, ellipsis, substitution and parallelism. Lexical devices refer to the lexical cohesion and conjunction. And phonetic devices mean the application of rhyme. The linguistic features of Dong songs are mainly embodied in the rhyme and rhetoric application which is helpful for the popularization of those songs. The social and cultural implication of the oral text is embodied by a beautiful picture of harmonious coexistence between human being and the nature. At the same time, some problems about the oral text inheritance are also found. The traditional genetic and geographical inheritances are influenced by foreign cultures, so a series of effective measures are needed to protect the inheritance of the oral texts.
