A Study Onthe Artistic Characteristics Of Lacquerware Ornamentation In The Tomb Of Marquis Zeng

The Tomb of Marquis Zeng was one of the most important archaeological discoveries in 20 th. The lacquerware in the Tomb of Marquis Zeng has high artistic value in its fabrication process and rich types. This thesis focuses on the artistic characteristics of lacquerwareornamentation in the Tomb of Marquis Zeng, doing some studies on its types, themes, and artistic characteristics.The coffin-inside and some other lacquerwares have more artistic value in ornamentation, picture composition and color. In the themes of lacquerwareornamentation, there were five themes such as nature/human, animal,plant and so on in the Tomb of Marquis Zeng. And the geometricornamentation was more multiple and flexible, influenced by the culture of Chu State. In the picture composition, more than ten methods were used to depict the ornamentation of various themes. In the decoration technique, the characteristics and romantic personality of Chu Culture were embodied in the composition of ornamentation, the establishment of image and the usage of colors through intricate methods and style. In the usage of colors, red and dark was the main base color, and many gorgeous colors were used to show the grand scenes.The lacquerwareornamentation in the Tomb of Marquis Zeng had more important artistic characteristics than the other areas and periods, which is the representative reflection of the Witch Culture in Chu State, Confucianism and Taoist Thought, and central plains culture.
