| This thesis is about a consecutive interpretation of an interview “Chinese and American Graduate Educationâ€. The author invited Jordan Dreyer as the interviewee, who is a foreign teacher in the School of Foreign Language of Jilin University. The author also elaborately selected the topic and made full preparations. The main characteristics of this interview were that, the language was relatively colloquial but the talking speed was fast, and there were many terminologies in pedagogy. For her three major interpreting problems: lexical gap, the addressing of long and difficult sentences, and sentence coherence, the author attempted to explore the causes, and put forward countermeasures. This thesis comprises six parts. Introduction concerns an overall description of the thesis. Chapter One gives a brief introduction to the interpreting task. Chapter Two analyzes the whole interpreting process in detail. Chapter Three and Four are vital parts of this thesis. Through the analysis of transcript, the author found out major faults and tried to seek some countermeasures for them. To actively expand vocabulary is a significant coping strategy for lexical gap. The segmentation and readjustment of sentence order can effectively reduce misinterpretation and information loss of long and difficult sentences. To achieve sentence coherence in interpreting, interpreters should use appropriate cohesive devices. The conclusion part is a review to the whole report. |
