In recent years, more and more family tragedies caused by the psychological problems of children have been reported in various media. Besides, more and more parents have realized that intelligence quotient(IQ) is not the key to future success. As the first teachers of their children,parents have to lay stress on the emotional intelligence(EI) training in family and help their children develop EI skills which equip them with high adaptability to society and thus help them become a positive part of the society.The concept of EI was first proposed by the American Psychologists, Salovey and Mayer in1990. After 25-year development, the research of EI in the U.S.A. has become mature.However, the research in China is lagging behind. According to the survey of research papers published in this field from 1990 to 2012, the proportion of research papers published in the U.S.A. is 37.2%, while no more than 2.3% in China. Therefore, the translation and introduction of books of EI from the U.S.A. has become necessary. It would offer reference to EI researchers and guidance to parents in our country.This report is based on my experience of translating the book, Parent’s Guide to Emotional Intelligence in Children(Korrel Kanoy). According to translation theory proposed by Peter Newmark, the source text is of the type of informative text in which psychological terms make the source text authoritative and educative. Besides, examples of daily life in the U.S.A. are applied for further analysis and explanation. Meanwhile, many popular and easy-to-understand idioms and colloquial expressions are adopted as well to make the target text more real and readable for the readers.Explicit introduction of background of the task, its process and case analysis are included in this report. Case analyses are carried from three aspects, namely lexical, syntactic and textual level. Based on functional equivalence theory, I discuss the translation strategies applied during the process of translation. Due to the cultural differences between China and the U.S.A, the suitable translation strategies of domestication is advocated.In this report, I state my own experience in translating the book, Parent’s Guide to Emotional Intelligence in Children(Korrel Kanoy) with the hope that it may shed some lights on other students majoring in MTI.
