| Nowadays,science and technology has increasingly profound impact on people’s perception and daily lives.News,as a major source for the public to be better informed about the latest scientific achievements at home and abroad,has played an indispensable role in modern people’s daily lives.The translation project selects eight pieces of English tech news on the official websites of the popular foreign scientific magazines and websites,which include Scientific American,Science,Nature and Science Daily as case study to explore the translation of long sentences in English tech news.The report introduces the features of tech news in terms of words and sentences,namely,the extensive use of tech terms and inclination of long sentences.And the features of long sentences can be further divided into tendency toward nominalization,employment of passive voice,extensive use of modifiers and complex logical relations.All these features are so different from Chinese writing,thus posing difficulties in the process of translation.Newmark held the opinion that communicative translation is suitable for informative text and tech news belongs to informative text,so the author chooses his communicative translation theory as the theoretical guideline for the translation practice.Under the guidance of communicative translation theory,the translation of long sentences in English tech news should focus on accuracy and readability.With such rules in mind,the author explores the characteristics of long sentences in English tech news,namely,nominalization,passive voice,logical relations,abundant information and sentence structures which are also the difficulties.By adopting such translation methods and techniques as conversion,addition,subtraction,restructuring and so on,the author tries to reproduce an effect as close as possible to that intended by the source text to fully achieve the communicative effect. |
