On The Translation Of Long Sentences In English For Science And Technology With Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory

Annual Energy Outlook 2015(AEO2015),which is the translation project of this report,is an energy report released by the U.S.Energy Information Administration in April 2015.Belonging to technical style,the text of AEO2015 is of informative function in accordance with Newmark’s translation theory.With meticulous logic and deliberate expressions,AEO2015 contains a great number of long sentences and complex sentences,which are the tough problems to be dealt with by the translator.Based on Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory,this report studies long sentences in English for Science and Technology(EST),aiming to analyze and summarize translation strategies combining theory with practice under different circumstances.Although scholars are increasingly aware that practice should be combined with theory,there are few studies on long sentences in EST under the guidance of Communicative Translation Theory.Five translation strategies,therefore,including embedding,cutting,splitting-off,recasting and compressing,are summarized in this report though the analyses of the characteristics of long sentences in EST and the differences between Chinese and English long sentences under the Communicative Translation Theory.In the process of translation,the translator should deliver information to the reader in line with the culture and pragmatic form of the target language and comprehend the differences of word orders,voices and structures between Chinese and English.It is imperative to be acquainted with EST features and master specialized knowledge for the translator.Clauses,non-finite forms,passive voices and prepositional phrases also need to be dealt with creatively.Moreover,the structure and logic of long sentences should be properly handled with the five translation strategies in appropriate and precise expressions.
