The Analysis Of Court Interpreter’s Roles

Under the backdrop of China accession to the WTO,China welcome more and more foreign governments,non-governmental organizations,overseas enterprises and tourists coming to China to do business,for travelling,or even for settlement.Subsequently,the ratio of foreign-related disputes or crimes,proportionately,increase.Court interpreting is not only one of those approaches aiming to protect the rights of defendants,but also serves as a bridge connecting the plaintiff,the defendant,the judge and the witness.This results in a soaring demand for court interpreting service in China.As a student majoring in the English-Chinese interpreting,the author conducted a lot of field practices in the legal field over the past one year,including court interpreting,which is a valuable experience to the author.Thus,the author writes this practice paper in a perspective of descriptive study and shares his experience with his fellows.Firstly,the author briefly introduces the background information of court interpreting,the clients,the interpreter and this task.Secondly,the author gives a relatively detailed process description of this task,including the pre-task preparation,task execution,difficulties encountered and post-task summary.In the post-summary part,the author takes a series of approaches like analyzing the transcribed texts,getting feedback from the clients,paying a return visit to the clients,etc.Thirdly,based on the transcribed texts,the author carries out case study about the roles he has played in court interpreting,aiming to propose some useful interpreting skills and tactics that can be adopted in the future courtroom interpreting to optimize the interpreting service.Besides,the author also discusses the difficulties encountered in his court interpreting,and introduces some of his methods in coping with those difficulties.By analyzing this court interpreting,the author hopes to enhance his interpreting competence and provide his fellows with some valuable experience.With this,they may be able to cope with challenges and difficulties encountered during court interpreting in the future,and provide their clients with high-quality interpreting service.
