C-E Simultaneous Interpretation Strategies From The Perspective Of The Interpretive Theory

China’s overall national strength has enhanced Chinese and foreign cultural exchanges.Various cultural activities are inaugurated,such as famous book fairs,thus attracting experts and scholars coming from afar.Indeed mutual exchanges among them contribute to enhancing exchanges of different cultures.Nevertheless,taking account of disparities in languages,on-site interpretation serves as a bridge between cultures.To date,many speeches have been rendered into English,but misinterpretations sometimes happen owing to interpreters’adoption of improper translation strategies.Thereupon,the quality of simultaneous interpretation exerts a profound impact on exchanges and interaction between the speaker and audience,and decides whether the conference goes smoothly.In the 1960s,Seleskovitch and Lederer proposed the Interpretive Theory for interpreting studies and practice.According to this theory,interpreting can fall into three parts,namely,understanding,deverbalization and expression.It highlights and gives top priority to communicative behaviour.To put it in another way,the primary responsibility for the interpreter is to convey information whereas disregarding complete equivalence of two languages.Guided by the Interpretive Theory,this thesis makes a case study in interpreting What is Literary Experience by Ge Fei on the 23^rd Hong Kong Book Fair.The speaker touched upon titles of works and culture-loaded words in a colloquial manner,even with repetition.Based on the three rules of the Interpretive Theory,this thesis explores interpreting strategies of C-E simultaneous interpretation,including literal translation,liberal translation,deduction,amplification and combination.It’s hoped that this translation project,to a certain degree,can facilitate the practice and research of the simultaneous interpretation of Chinese speeches.
