Implicit Logical Relations In English For Science And Technology And Their Translation Techniques

Currently,studies about the translation techniques of implicit logical relations in EST have been mainly focused as follows: the studies of implicit causality,analyzing from words,sentences and paragraphs,studying from grammatical and semantic relations,empirical studies by corpus,exploring by case analysis,etc.However,studies are seldom done from other main implicit logical relations except implicit causal relationship.Moreover,most of the existing studies are done by analyzing scattered examples,rather than by using integrated materials.Therefore,on the basis of the translation of U.S.Navy Diving Manual(Volume 2,Chapter 9,Paragraph 7-12),the paper studys the implicit logical relations and their translation techniques.According to the materials,the paper aims at studying three main implicit logical relations: connection,condition and purpose,and discussing their translation techniques from the addition of logical connection words,deconstruction and reorganization,syntactic linearity and synthesization.Because of the simplicity and wildly used short sentences in the materials,and some connection among those independent sentences,the technique is used to make the connection and the logic of the translated text closer and more clear;The syntactic features and expressions between English and Chinese are different,so relevant English sentences can be deconstructed and reconstructed to adapt to the reading habits of target language readers and increase the readability of the translated text;EST aims at conveying information and most of the sentences are arranged in logical order,so the sentences can be translated according to their own order and then doing some adjustment,addition and deletion;Some short sentences which contain related information can be combined into one sentence during translating to make closer connection.All of the four techniques are involved in the translation of the three logical relations and the paper makes respective analysis according to the materials.
