With the promulgation and implementation of the New Course Standard in Senior English and new reforms of the university enrollment system, listening and speaking ability of the students has gained much attention. Besides, People are very concerned about how to select audio-visual textbooks which can help improve students' listening and speaking competence as well as better meet their individualized learning needs. Therefore, with the guidance of related theories, this thesis systematically gives an analysis of the basic characteristics and main functions of audio-visual textbooks, which eventually leads to an analytical framework for audio-visual textbooks. Based on this framework, a comparative study of two audio-visual textbooks(Family Album U.S.A & Happy Chinese) is made, which also aims to provide suggestions on the producing of English audio-visual textbooks for secondary school students.The main contents of this thesis are listed as follows.1) Based on the present studies, this thesis summed up six basic characteristics and three main functions of audio-visual textbooks.2) Based on the comparative and evaluation research on audio-visual textbooks as well as the evaluation theories and evaluation indicator systems of English textbooks and English audio-visual textbooks, the thesis makes an effort to build an analytical framework for audio-visual textbooks in which its characteristics and functions are seriously taken into consideration.3) According to the analytical framework, this thesis makes a comparative study of two audio-visual textbooks from five aspects: philosophies, aims, contents, structures and supporting materials. Several suggestions are also made on the producing of English audio-visual textbooks for secondary school students.
