The phenomenon of inevitable leaks of sucrose and heaps of sugar dust is always existed in the process of sucrose making, which will bring about sugar dust explosion in an extremely easy way, and affect the safe running of sucrose producing. To eliminate the security risk emerged in the produce of sucrose making, and avoid the occurrence of sugar dust explosion accident, this paper takes sugar dust as the object of study, with the 20 L sphere explosion unit, experimental tests were carried out to learn the explosive characteristics of sugar dust, and the influence of particle size, ignition energy and inert material (sodium chloride powder) on which were also learned. The specifics are as follows:(1) The explosive characteristics of sugar dust have been studied through explosion tests on sugar dust of different concentration. The lower explosion limit along with the maximum explosion pressure and the maximum explosion index of sugar dust have been learned, the effect of different concentration on explosion pressure and explosion index has been concluded. And according to the classification of dust explosion hazard, the risk of sugar dust explosion has been recognized.(2) The influence of particle size in different distribution to explosive characteristics of sugar dust has been studied. The results show that with decrease of particle size, the lower explosion limit of sugar dust firstly drops and then goes up, the maximum explosion pressure and the maximum explosion index of sugar dust increase. Generally speaking, the decrease of particle size will lead to the increase of sugar dust explosion hazard.(3) The effect of ignition energy with different intensity on explosive characteristics of sugar dust has been experimentally studied. The relationship between ignition energy and sugar dust explosion hazard has been researched, and the variety law of which has been analyzed.(4) The influence of inert substance (sodium chloride powder) to the maximum explosion pressure and the maximum explosion index of sugar dust have been tested. It was discovered that sodium chloride powder has an obvious inhibitory effect on explosion intensity of sugar dust.(5) The influences of different factors on explosive characteristics of sugar dust have been summed up. It was discovered that the factor which made the most distinct influence on sugar dust explosion pressure and the lower explosion limit is particle size, and the factor which made the strongest effect on explosion index is the inert substance (sodium chloride powder).The results will play an important guiding role in the implement of sugar dust explosion protection for sugar refinery.
