English listening is an important ability to good communication.Studies on how to teach English listening in higher education effectively have been ongoing in recent years at home and abroad. But most of them are approached from the perspective of listening material types, training models, theories and methods of teaching, class structures and activities and Computer Assisted Language teaching.Literature review indicates that applying MOOC to assist college English listening teaching is fewer. In view of it,the thesis attempts to apply MOOC into college listening teaching with teaching experiment so as to explore the teaching results of MOOC assisting listening teaching and help improve students' listening abilities through quantitative and qualitative methods. The theoretical framework of the thesis is based on blended learning to optimize the teaching results. The subjects of the experiment in the study are sophomores majoring in medicine from a university of Inner Mongolia, with 28 students in experimental group and 30 in control group. In experimental group, the new teaching method requires students to study the regulated courses of MOOC independently in advance. At class, the first 30 minutes are spent sharing and discussing the knowledge learned from MOOC and the rest are having traditional listening teaching. While in the control group, there is only traditional listening teaching method with pre-listening,while-listening and after-listening.Major findings: analysis of test papers before and after the experiment, the questionnaires and interviews after a semester's control experiment manifested that there are differences between traditional listening teaching and the new teaching method from features and teaching results.First,MOOC-assisted and blended-learning-based teaching method has some features different from the traditional method, which are closely related to teaching results, including richness of teaching contents to meet different needs, flexibility of schedule and teaching activities to consider students' learning states and challenges to students to learn independently and subjectivity and to teachers to guide.Second, the new teaching method, compared with traditional teaching method, has an obvious positive effects on students' listening abilities. They are able to deal with different kinds of listening materials,no matter situational conversations or news or lectures;to grasp useful listening skills such as pronunciation and liaison, key words and sentences;to know about appropriate ways of English listening learning rather than pattern drills or exercising unconsciously.Third, students generally hold an affirmative attitude to the new teaching method and believe it can help improve their listening abilities.Rich learning contents meet their interests, flexible teaching model enhances their confidence and various teaching activities inspire their creativity and independence. The study has both theoretical and practical significance. At first, blending MOOC with traditional listening teaching to improve the teaching results and efficiency is important to expand the meaning of blended learning. Then, this study provides a new method to college English listening teaching to achieve a better teaching result and it makes contribution to improving the traditional teaching. Finally, this study takes a deeper consideration of students' learning needs and abilities in the context of worldwide internet. It is necessary for traditional listening teaching to make such improvement because of students' wide use of internet and rising interests in new knowledge.
