A Report On Translation Of Encyclopedia Of Science And Technology Communication (Part E)

With the rapid development of science and technology,the international communication in science and technology grows,and the government has contributed a lot to improve the public understanding of science.Hence,China ’s scientific literacy level has been gradually improved yet still not so optimistic due to lack of high-level S&T works aiming to lift the public understanding science,which accordingly hinders the public innovation capabilities.In order to increase China’s high-quality science works,translation of popular science works has become an important source.The translation material studied in this report is a translation project initiated by the China Association for Science and Technology,in a context of promoting the development of science culture in China.The manuscript is Encyclopedia of Science and Technology compiled by Susanna Hornig Priest.As a member of the translation project group,I am responsible for translating some sections.By studying the language features of this text,this report is guided by Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory in exploring the suitable translation methods.This report mainly includes four parts.The first part is introduction to the translation project.The second part is introduction to the source text and analysis of the translation standards based on the features of popular science writing.The third part is the discussion of my translation practice.It mainly introduces the difficulties encountered,a brief introduction to the theoretical background used to guide the translation and how to deal with the difficulties.The last part is a summary of the project.I hope to improve my translation proficiency through this translation project,and help popularize science and technology in China.
